You might recall in a previous blog post the Norris family invited me to document the birth of their twins.
Eight years later, I opened an email from Ashley.
She was asking if I would do it all over again.
Of course, the answer was yes.
And just like that, the story continues.
There is something incredibly special about being invited back into a family's life after so many years. Birth photography isn't just about documenting the moment a baby arrives. It's about preserving an entire chapter — the anticipation, the nerves, the excitement, the first meeting, the tiny details, and all of the people who were there to welcome a new little life into the family.
Getting to photograph the Norris twins was an honor.
Getting to photograph them again eight years later?
That feels like coming full circle!!
And wouldn't you know it… I missed the birth.
Actually, I didn't just miss the birth. I missed the maternity session, too.
And somehow, that makes this birth story even more special.
The night before Ashley's scheduled maternity session, we talked, confirmed everything, and had a perfect plan. Everything was ready to go.
But babies have a funny way of reminding us who's really in charge.
In the wee hours of the morning, baby Norris decided she was ready to make her debut — and she certainly wasn't interested in sharing the spotlight with anyone else. There would be no maternity session. There would be no waiting around for the perfect timeline.
She was ready now.
Ashley was rushed to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, and by the time morning rolled around, my plans for the day had changed completely.
I woke up that morning and excitedly texted Ashley about our maternity session… only to find out that there was already a baby in her arms.
It took me about an hour to gather everything I needed, get my own children off to Grandma's, and make the drive to the hospital.
And honestly? I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else.
Over the next couple of hours, I photographed this brand-new little girl and the people who had been waiting so anxiously to meet her. I captured Mom and Dad marveling over her tiny fingers and those perfectly squishy little rolls. I photographed the older kids coming into the room to meet their new sister and Grandma meeting her newest grandbaby.
The urgency of the unexpected birth was still fresh, but there was already so much love in that room.
The next day, I returned to the hospital for their Fresh 48 session.
And let me tell you — this family cleans up nice.
Everyone was excited to get some photographs with the new baby, but this time there was no rushing. No wondering what was happening next. The adrenaline of the birth had worn off, and everyone was ready to slow down, snuggle, and soak her in.
About two weeks later, we continued the story with a newborn session.
We did part of the session in the studio, where we could take advantage of more controlled lighting and create some beautiful portraits of baby Norris. Then we continued the session at their home in Lapeer, Michigan.
At home, we photographed their family in the place where they were beginning this new chapter together. We spent time both inside and outside, capturing the little details of their everyday life, along with some beautiful nursing images — photographs that will hopefully remind Ashley of this fleeting season for years to come.
And then there was the maternity session that never happened.
Or… at least, not exactly.
One of the things I love most about Ashley is her ability to roll with the punches.
Instead of trying to recreate something we had already missed, we decided to do something different. Around six weeks after Norris was born, we met up in Macomb Michigan for an outdoor family session.
It gave us the opportunity to document how much Norris had already changed since those first hospital days, while also giving some attention to her older siblings and individual portraits of each of them.
In the end, we didn't get the maternity session we had planned.
We got something better: a story that unfolded exactly the way it was supposed to.
From an unexpected early-morning arrival, to those first quiet hours at Hurley, to siblings meeting their baby sister, Grandma's first snuggles, a Fresh 48 session, newborn portraits at home and in the studio, and finally an outdoor family session six weeks later — I got to follow this little girl through the very beginning of her life.
And while I may have missed the actual moment of her birth, I didn't miss the story.
I loved every minute of following this baby girl's journey and, more than anything, getting to witness and document the love of a mother and the strength she brings to her family at every turn.
Some stories don't go according to plan.
They're even more beautiful because of it.
